The whole machine, taken apart

Walk around Junk Yard in 3-D: the cabinet, the backbox, every toy on the playfield and the mechanisms underneath. Take it apart layer by layer, see through it, and make it work. No ball, no timer, no tilt.

Works on desktop and phones. On a phone the tools sit in a strip along the bottom: swipe it for Tour, X-ray and Deep zoom.

The explorer on tour stop 8 of 29, the crane drive: the rest of the machine turns to glass around the motor and linkage behind the back panel, and a card gives its part number, what it does and the manual page it comes from.

The tour

29 stops through the machine

The guided tour flies from the cabinet to the backbox, across every toy and down to the coils under the playfield. At each stop the rest of the machine turns to glass and a card says what the part is, what it does in the game, its Williams part number, and where that comes from: the service manual page, the patent or our research.

Step through it, or press Autoplay and watch: each stop shows its mechanism working.

The explorer at 70 percent explode: the backbox lifted high above, the playfield with all its toys raised off the cabinet, and the mechanisms hanging underneath.

Explode

Take it apart, layer by layer

Drag the slider and the machine comes apart in the order you'd take it apart: the glass, the backbox, the ramps and plastics, the toys, the posts and targets, then the whole playfield lifts off the cabinet and the mechanisms spread out underneath. The label tells you which layer is moving. Press play to watch it come apart and go back together.

Isolate

Click any part

Every part is its own piece, more than 130 of them, each with a sourced card. Click (or tap) one and the rest of the machine turns to glass. Look closer flies the camera to it; Back to the machine (or Esc) puts everything back.

Working mechanisms

Cards for moving parts have a button, and the explorer runs the game's own coils and physics: the crane lifts, the fridge popper fires a ball, Spike lunges out of his house, the fork and the bus post move, the flippers and slings kick, the trough ejects and the autoplunger launches.

X-ray and cutaway

The explorer's underside view with x-ray on: the cabinet and playfield are transparent, and the coils, popper and brackets under the playfield stand out.

Deep zoom

The playfield at 400 pixels per inch

The remastered playfield in full: 8,100 × 18,600 pixels, loaded tile by tile as you zoom. Scroll or pinch to zoom, drag to move, double-click to zoom in. Lamps on lights every insert, as if the machine were running.

Getting around

Controls

  • Rotate: drag. Pan: right-drag or two fingers. Zoom: scroll or pinch.
  • Views: Front, Top, Playfield, Backbox and Underside (keys 1 to 5).
  • Keyboard: arrow keys pan, Shift + arrows rotate, + / − zoom, Esc goes back.
  • Share what you see: the address follows you, so a link opens the same part, tour stop, explode or zoom.

Built from the manual

Every part has a source

The mechanisms under the playfield were modelled from the exploded drawings in Williams' service manual: the flipper assemblies, the slingshots, the ball trough, the crane drive behind the back panel, the three-ball popper under the fridge, the dog mechanism, the fork lifter and the bus post, each with the part number printed on its coil. The cabinet and backbox have their boards inside, labelled the same way.
